13. Palace of Charles de Lorraine (CANCELED)

Arch. J. FAULTE, 1757-1766

SATURDAY 05 & SUNDAY 06 OCTOBER 2024

Place du Musée 1, 1000 Brussels

Time :  45 min

The Palace of Charles de Lorraine is one of the few surviving buildings in Brussels from the Enlightenment era. Construction of the remarkable architectural ensemble bordering today's Place du Musée started in 1757 on the site of the former Nassau Palace. The homogenous and elegant U-shaped façades have central projecting bays topped with pediments with bas-reliefs and horizontal bands. The abundant decoration of the semi-circular entrance, an ingenious design by architect Jean Faulte, is attributed to the sculptor Laurent Delvaux. The interior of the Palace was to a large extent destroyed when the Mont des Arts was laid out in the 1960's, but the beautifully paved south-eastern wing remains and can be seen during the guided visits.
