17. Former Villa Eenens-Terlinden (Maison des Arts de Schaerbeek)

Arch. UNKNOWN, 1826

SATURDAY 05 & SUNDAY 06 OCTOBER 2024

Chaussée de Haecht 147, 1030 Schaerbeek

Time :  40 min

The street-facing building at 147, Chaussée de Haecht conceals a residence built in 1826 for a rich linen merchant named Charles-Louis Eenens. In 1876, the house was increased in height by one floor and flanked by two projecting wings. Between 1894 and 1899, an Eclectic-style brick tower was added and the stables extended. While the exterior of the building is in keeping with the Neoclassical style, the interior boasts a series of salons with decorative elements borrowed from the Louis XV, Louis XVI and Flemish neo-Renaissance styles, all illustrating the different tastes in vogue at the time. A rare example of an aristocratic dwelling from the Belle Époque period in Schaerbeek, the residence of the Eenens-Terlinden family also comprised a garden, of which remains a pond surrounded by lawns and trellised trees. The municipality of Schaerbeek has managed the property since the 1950's and has established its House of the Arts there, a setting for exhibitions, concerts, lectures and other cultural events.
