Rue Royale 294, 1210 Brussels
Duration of guided tour: more info to come
Just like its neighbours situated Rue de Royale 292 and 298, this monumental town house was constructed in 1869 to the designs of architect Antoine Mennessier, all buildings being commissioned by baron Oscar de Mesnil. With its even proportions, its window pediments and its projecting cornice, the facade is clearly inspired by the Italian palazzi from the Renaissance period. The common name Hotel Puccini refers to the very famous resident who spent the last months of his life here in 1924: Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (Madama Butterfly, La Bohème). Puccini had traveled to Brussels to undergo a treatment for throat cancer, using radium. The interior consists of several rooms whose largely authentic decoration offers a fine sample of the noble taste of the 19th century. Among others, the painted coffered ceilings, the monumental staircase and the original chandeliers stand out. Currently, the building hosts the headquarters of Familiehulp, a large organisation in the field of home care.
