Charlier Museum

SUNDAY 09 OCTOBER 2022

Meeting point

Avenue des Arts 16 -1210 Saint-Josse-ten-Noode

This splendid Neo-Classical townhouse was built in 1844 on the Avenue des Arts, when what is now the inner ring road was a tree-lined promenade and part of the new "grands boulevards" that were part of the metamorphosis of the old mediaeval city (along with the rue Royale and the Botanical Gardens, etc.). Between 1890 and 1892, Victor Horta made alterations to it, demolishing the stables and outbuildings at the rear and replacing them with a large exhibition room, and then demolishing the neighbouring house (No.15) and replacing it with a Neo-Classical extension containing another large exhibition space, this one with a glazed roof. Today, the building is home to the Charlier Museum.
