Former Demeuldre-Coché porcelain manufactory

SATURDAY 14 & SUNDAY 15 OCTOBER 2023

Meeting Point

Chaussée de Wavre 143, 1050 Brussels

Duration of guided tour: 40 min.

Founded in 1815, the Demeuldre-Coché porcelain manufactory created decorative porcelain and earthenware panels, for example those that decorate the facade of the former Old England department store (now the Musical Instruments Museum). The factory continued its production until 1953 and its buildings were demolished around 1960. All that remains is the former factory shop, built in 1905 on the Chaussée de Wavre to the design of Maurice Bisschops, and the former exhibition space, built in 1870 on the Rue Georges Lorand. The abundant polychromatic decoration of the imposing facade of the shop still attracts our attention and the wide plate-glass windows on the ground floor allow us to see the timber decorations inside. The facade also features three remarkable glazed ceramic panels by Isidore De Rudder dating from 1897 representing allegories of Harmony, Colour and Measure; they bear witness to the skill of the former manufactory workers, who frequently collaborated with well-known artists. Today, the building houses the TALK C.E.C. art gallery, which organises a variety of cultural events and exhibitions here.
